Planning an Uluru and Great Barrier Reef itinerary
Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef are the two things almost every first-time visitor wants, and the two things a generic "top 10" list will never tell you are a five-hour flight apart, not a day trip apart.
Best time to visit Uluru and the reef together
April through September avoids the worst of the Red Centre's summer heat (regularly 40°C-plus in December–February) while still sitting inside the reef's better-visibility window — the one stretch of the year where both halves of this itinerary are at their best at once.
Getting between Uluru and Cairns
There's no direct road between the two — this route is built around a flight, sometimes routed via Sydney depending on the day. Check the specific routing before locking dates rather than assuming a direct connection exists.
Why these two, and not more
Adding a third region — Sydney beyond a landing stop, or Tasmania — is what turns a focused 12-day itinerary into a rushed 3-week one. This route deliberately stays to two places done well.
Day by day
The full route
Three stops. The middle one is the whole reason for the trip.
Sydney
A short landing stop — harbour orientation, one big coastal walk — before the flight inland. Not the focus of this trip, just the easiest way in.
Uluru & Kata Tjuta
Sunrise and sunset viewing from two different lookouts, the full base walk around Uluru itself, and the Valley of the Winds walk through Kata Tjuta — genuinely the better of the two walks, and the one most people skip.
Cairns & the Reef
A reef day out on the water, then a day up in the Daintree for the rainforest side of things. The contrast with the desert you just left is the whole point.
Buffer, fly out
One more reef trip or a slow morning at the esplanade, then fly out of Cairns.
Worth knowing
Before you go on this one
- Heat
- Uluru summer (Dec–Feb) regularly hits 40°C — walks start at sunrise for a reason, not for the light.
- The flight
- Uluru to Cairns isn't direct on most days — check routing before you lock the dates, it sometimes runs via Sydney.
- Sacred sites
- Climbing Uluru itself has been prohibited since 2019 — the base walk is the respectful and, by most accounts, better way to experience it anyway.
