Planning a one month Australia itinerary

A 28-day Australia itinerary isn't four separate trips stitched together — it's the only realistic way to combine the east coast, the Red Centre, the Top End and Western Australia in a single visit without doubling back.

Is 28 days really enough for all of this?

It's enough for one considered pass through five regions, not a leisurely one — this itinerary includes deliberate spare days precisely because a month of largely self-drive travel across three climates leaves little room for delays otherwise.

How to split the driving across a month

Most people swap vehicles partway through rather than trying to cover the whole route in one car — a standard rental works for Sydney and Uluru, but the Kimberley leg needs a proper 4WD, usually picked up in Darwin.

Who this itinerary actually suits

This route is for visitors who've already decided a return trip isn't likely — it front-loads distance and difficulty (the Kimberley leg in particular) on the assumption this is the one shot at seeing the country's full range, not a taste of it.

Day by day

The full route

This is four of the other routes on this page, stitched into one continuous month.

Days 1–4

Sydney

The full Sydney stint from the East Coast Classic — harbour, Bondi to Coogee, a Blue Mountains day trip — with an extra day built in for jet lag.

Days 5–8

Uluru & the Red Centre

Sunrise and sunset at Uluru, the base walk, and Kata Tjuta's Valley of the Winds — the same core three days as the Red Centre & Reef route, with a spare day either side.

Days 9–13

Darwin & Kakadu

Ubirr at sunset, a Yellow Water wildlife cruise, and Katherine Gorge on the way through — easing into the Top End before the harder driving starts.

Days 14–20

The Kimberley

A full Gibb River Road crossing, not just a taste of it — Bell Gorge, Windjana Gorge, and enough spare days to sit out bad weather or a flat tyre without wrecking the schedule.

Days 21–24

Broome

Cable Beach, the Staircase to the Moon if the dates align, and genuine rest days after three weeks of hard travel.

Days 25–28

Perth & the coast

Fremantle and Rottnest Island to close the trip on something easier, then fly out of Perth.

Worth knowing

Before you go on this one

This is not a light itinerary
Four weeks of largely self-drive travel across three climates is genuinely demanding — build in more spare days than feel necessary, not fewer.
One vehicle won't do it all
A standard rental works for Sydney and Uluru; the Kimberley leg needs a proper 4WD — most people swap vehicles in Darwin rather than trying to do the whole month in one car.
Book the Kimberley leg first
Gibb River Road accommodation is limited and the dry-season window is short — lock that section in before building the rest of the trip around it.
