Planning a Ningaloo Reef and Western Australia road trip
Ningaloo is the reef most visitors to Australia have never heard of, mainly because reaching it means a genuinely long drive north from Perth rather than a short hop from a major hub.
Best time for whale sharks at Ningaloo
Roughly March through July is whale shark season along this stretch of coast — outside that window the reef itself is still excellent for snorkelling straight off the beach, just without the headline animal most people are planning around.
How far the drive from Perth actually is
This is the most remote itinerary on the site by driving distance. Splitting the drive north with a stop at the Pinnacles Desert, rather than pushing straight through, is worth the extra day — fuel and water planning matter on this route almost as much as on the Kimberley itinerary.
Why this route is quieter than the east coast reef
Ningaloo's reef sits close enough to shore that most of it needs no boat at all, and the distance from Perth keeps visitor numbers well below Cairns or the Whitsundays — the trade-off for a longer drive is a noticeably emptier reef.
Day by day
The full route
North up the coast and back — the driving here is real, but so is having the reef mostly to yourself.
Perth
Fremantle's markets and harbour, then a day trip out to Rottnest Island for the quokkas before the long drive starts.
Drive north
A genuinely long drive — the Pinnacles Desert makes a worthwhile stop partway, and breaking the drive there instead of pushing straight through is worth the extra day.
Ningaloo Reef
A whale shark swim if the season lines up (Mar–Jul), and reef access straight off the beach — no boat required for most of it, unlike the east coast reef.
Shark Bay
Monkey Mia's wild dolphins at the shoreline each morning, Shell Beach's entirely shell-made sand, and the stromatolites at Hamelin Pool — some of the oldest living structures on Earth.
Fly out
Fly out of Learmonth (near Exmouth) rather than driving all the way back to Perth, unless the extra days are part of the plan.
Worth knowing
Before you go on this one
- Distances
- This is the most remote route on this page by driving time — fuel and water planning matter here almost as much as on the Kimberley route.
- Whale sharks
- Season runs roughly March to July — outside that window the reef is still excellent, just without the headline animal.
- Road trains
- Long-haul trucks on this stretch are genuinely long — give them extra room and don't attempt to overtake without a clear, long sightline.
