Planning a Kimberley and Top End itinerary
The Kimberley is the least forgiving itinerary on this site, and also the one with the least competition for the view — a proper 4WD route through gorges and wetlands most visitors to Australia never see.
Best time for the Gibb River Road
May through September is not a preference here, it's a requirement — the wet season (November–April) closes most of the Gibb River Road entirely, so this itinerary only works in the dry-season window.
Darwin to Broome: what the drive actually takes
This is a multi-day crossing, not a long day trip — the Gibb River Road section alone takes several days with detours to Bell Gorge and Windjana Gorge included, on unsealed roads that move slower than the map distance suggests.
What kind of vehicle this route needs
A standard rental car will not survive the Kimberley leg. This itinerary needs a proper 4WD with appropriate tyres, and a driver comfortable checking them — not a soft-roader booked because it was the cheaper option.
Day by day
The full route
The one route here where the driving itself is the main event, not the gaps between stops.
Darwin & Kakadu
Ubirr rock art at sunset over the floodplain, then a Yellow Water cruise at dawn for crocodiles and birdlife — one of the most reliable wildlife-viewing hours in the country.
Katherine Gorge
A canoe or cruise through the gorge itself, then Katherine's hot springs to recover before the harder driving starts.
The Kimberley
A genuine stretch of the Gibb River Road — Bell Gorge and Windjana Gorge are both worth the detour off the main track. This is the section that needs a real 4WD, not a soft-roader.
Broome
Cable Beach by camel at sunset, the Staircase to the Moon phenomenon if the dates line up, then fly out.
Worth knowing
Before you go on this one
- Season is not optional
- The wet season (Nov–Apr) closes most of the Gibb River Road entirely — this route only works May through September.
- Vehicle
- A standard rental car will not survive the Kimberley leg — book a proper 4WD with the right tyres and know how to check them.
- Fuel & water
- Distances between fuel stops genuinely matter here — carry more water than feels necessary, and plan fuel stops before you leave phone signal.
