Planning a Sydney to Melbourne road trip along the coast

Sydney to Melbourne is usually a two-hour flight. This itinerary takes the other option — the coast road most flights skip entirely, with a detour inland to Canberra along the way.

Best time for the coastal drive

October through April gives the most reliable weather for this route, and overlaps with whale-watching season (roughly May–November) at Jervis Bay if your dates land within it — outside that window, skip the whale-watching stop and put the day elsewhere.

How long the drive actually takes

This is a genuinely long drive end to end, spread across five stops rather than rushed into three or four days. It only works if you're comfortable behind the wheel for several hours on most days of the trip.

Coastal route or inland via Canberra?

This itinerary does both — coast down to Jervis Bay, inland to Canberra for a deliberate change of pace, then back to the coast through Gippsland. Skipping Canberra shortens the trip by two days without breaking the route if time is tight.

Day by day

The full route

South the whole way, one city to the other — the most linear route on this page.

Days 1–2

Sydney

Harbour orientation and a coastal walk before heading south — the same first two days as the East Coast Classic, just pointed the other direction after.

Days 3–5

Jervis Bay & the South Coast

Hyams Beach for some of the whitest sand in the country, whale watching if the season lines up (May–Nov), and a slower pace than anywhere further north.

Days 6–7

Canberra

A genuine change of pace inland — the national institutions are free and worth a full day between them.

Days 8–11

Gippsland

Wilsons Promontory for proper coastal walking trails, then Ninety Mile Beach for the kind of empty coastline the East Coast Classic doesn't have room for.

Days 12–14

Melbourne

Laneways and coffee culture to close out the trip, then fly out.
